Storia – lo stabile dove sorgeva a st Magdalene ha una storia che inizia nel lontano XII secolo: dapprima adibito a lebbrosario, fu successivamente riadattato ad ospitare il convento di St Magdalene. Solo nella seconda meta del 1700 la distilleria aprì i battenti vicino alla Bonnytoun una delle poche distillerie provviste di regolare licenza di Linlithgow, la città da cui deriva l’altro nome con cui St Magdalene è conosciuta. Il proprietario della Bonnytoun, Adam Dowson, acquistò la nuova distilleria e la ingrandì al punto da includerle entrambe in un unico complesso. Nel 1912 la St Magdalene fu acquistato dalla DCL e tra il 1914 1915 entrò a far parte del gruppo Scottish Malt Distillers, ma nel 1985 cessò l’attività. Oggi gli edifici sono stati convertiti in appartamenti con i caratteristici tetti a pagoda ancora ben visibili.
Carattere – presenta un intenso aroma floreale, in cui spiccano note di rosa, spezie e profumi orientali; il gusto evidenzia sentori di carciofi arrostiti
Storia dell’imbottigliatore – Gordon & MacPhail è un imbottigliatore indipendente e distillatore di whisky scozzese.
Fondata nel 1895 a Elgin, nel nord est della Scozia da James Gordon e John Alexander MacPhail, oggi è un’azienda a conduzione familiare.
Di proprietà della famiglia Urquhart dal 1915, quando alla morte di James Gordon, John Urquhart, entrato nel negozio come apprendista, rilevò la società.
Nel 1993 diventarono anche distillatori con l’acquisizione della distilleria Benromach.
Nel 2010 Gordon & MacPhail fece la storia lanciando sul mercato un imbottigliamento di Mortlach invecchiato 70 anni, sancendo il record di invecchiamento per un whisky.
Gordon & MacPhail ha un negozio di vendita al dettaglio nella sede storica di Elgin nel quale è custodita una delle più grandi collezioni di whisky al mondo.

History – St Magdalene’s history starts many years ago, in the XII century. Initially, the building was used as hospital for lepers, being lately converted in the local St Magdalene’s monastery. It was only in the second half of 1700 that the distillery started being operative, close to Bonnytoun distillery, one of the few having a regular license for distilling in Linlithgow area – it is worth to point out that St Magdalene is also known as Linlithgow distillery. Adam Dowson, Bonnytoun’s distillery owner, bought the new distillery, making lately a sole complex. In 1912, St Magdalene was acquired by DCL company, and by the end of 1915 it was one of the Scottish Malt Distillers brands. In 1985 it was decommissioned. Nowadays, buildings are used as apartments, and no modifications have been made to the typical pagoda roofs.
Character – intense floral aroma pervades everything, and notes of roses, spices and eastern scents stick out, along with something remembering roasted artichoke.
About Gordon&MacPhail – Gordon & MacPhail is both an independent bottler and Scottish whisky-maker. Established in 1895 in Elgin (North-East side of Scotland) by James Gordon and John Alexander MacPhail, it is nowadays a family run company. Urquhart family has been running the company since 1915 when was acquired by John Urquhart, previously James Gordon’s assistant. In 1993, the company started managing also its own distillery, after purchasing Benromach distillery.
In 2010, history was made by Gordon&MacPhail: a 70-years-old Mortlach was released on the market, the oldest ageing ever released.
In Elgin, G&M also has a large shop and one of the greates whisky collection in the world.
