Storia – Non sempre, nel corso della sua storia, Glen Moray ha prodotto whisky. Inizialmente, infatti, l’impianto, fin dal 1828, era adibito alla produzione di birra – il West Brewery di Robert Thorn, ad Elgin. Fu solo nel 1897 che avvenne la conversione in distilleria. Da allora si segnala un andamento singhiozzante: la distilleria fu chiusa nel 1910 e, dopo una breve riapertura nel 1912, fu nuovamente chiusa per la successiva decade. Si può dire che la proprietà non tenesse in gran conto il suo avere, concentrando sforzi ed attenzioni sulla distilleria Aberlour. Fu così che nel 1920 avvenne un cambio di proprietà, con Macdonald&Muir – già proprietari di una parte di Glenmorangie – che presero in mano le sorti della distilleria. La ripresa della produzione fu fissata per il 1923 e da allora, fatta eccezione per un breve arresto nel 1932, la produzione corse spedita fino al 1958, anno in cui si arrestò nuovamente per un rifacimento della distilleria. Vale la pena segnalare che ciò comportò l’abbandono del malting floor in favore del Saladin box, che rimase operativo per vent’anni. Tra il 1978 ed il 1979 si abbandonò il maltaggio fatto in casa e gli alambicchi passarono da 2 a 4. Ad inizio anni 90, così come avvenne dapprima per Glenmorangie, anche il range di Glen Moray venne arricchito con una serie di “finished whisky”: questo particolare processo prevede che l’invecchiamento avvenga in grossa parte in delle botti di un certo tipo, al quale segue un breve invecchiamento in botti di altro tipo (“finishing”, per l’appunto). Si segnalano così il NAS con finishing in Chardonnay ed un 12 ed un 16 anni in Chenin Blanc. Nel 2004 la Macdonald&Miur Ltd, che in verità nel 1996 aveva cambiato nome in Glenmorangie plc, venne acquistata dal marchio di lusso Louis Vuitton Moët Hennessey.  Fu da questi che la compagnia francese La Martiniquaise (attuale proprietaria) acquistò poi Glen Moray nel 2008. Il whisky è prodotto grazie a 3 wash stills e 3 spirit stills, e viene utilizzato anche per la produzione del blended whisky Label 5, sempre di proprietà di La Martiniquaise. Nel 2009, per la prima volta nella sua storia, Glen Moray ha prodotto un whisky torbato (40 PPM).

Carattere – Volendolo descrivere con quelle che sono le peculiarità del suo entry level, parleremmo di uno spirito fresco e leggero, floreale e leggermente fruttato, con un buon bilanciamento. Note di frutta secca onnipresenti, con un finale dolcemente piccante e cedrato.

History – Not always, during the course of its life, Glen Moray has been operative as a distillery. Actually, at the very beginning it used to produce beer as West Brewery, run by Robert Thorn, in Elgin (Speyside). It was by the end of XIII century, in 1897, that this was converted in to a distillery. The first decades could be described as hiccupping: the distillery was closed in 1910 and, after a brief operative period in 1912, was then closed again in that same year for another decade. Owners, at that time, did not take care much of their belonging, focusing efforts and attentions towards Aberlour, their other distillery. So in 1920 Macdonald&Miur, owners of a share of Glenmorangie, decided to buy the distillery. It was decided that by the end 1923 that Glen Moray should have been operative again. Then, with the exception of 1932, when no whisky was produced at all, production run uninterruptedly until 1953, when it was closed for modernizing. It was during this process that malt floor was substituted in favor of Saladin box, used for the two following decades. In fact, in 1978, this was decommissioned, since it was decided to withdraw home-made malting. In 1979, number of stills doubled from two to four.

By the beginning of ’90, as previously made for Glenmorangie, Glen Moray range was widened with a series of “finished whisky”. This particular ageing process foresees two phases: the first, longer part foresees ageing in casks of particular type, followed by a second, shorter phase in which ageing occurs in casks different from the ones used for the first phase.  ’90 releases (NAS finished in Chardonnay and 12 yo and 16 yo finished in Chenin Blanc) belong to this series. In 2004 Macdonald&Miur Ltd, actually called Glenmorangie plc after company name change in 1996, was acquired by Louis Vuitton Moët Hennessey. Another change in property for Glen Moray occurred in 2008, when it was acquired by the current French owner La Martiniquaise. Whisky is produced thanks to 3 wash stills and 3 spirit stills, and it is used also for the production of Label5 blended whisky, also owned by La Matiniquaise. In 2009, for the first time in its history, a peated Glen Moray has been release.

Character – Presenting it according to the peculiarities of Glen Moray’s entry level release, we could describe it as a fresh, light spirit, floral and slightly fruity, well balanced. Permeating dried fruit, with citron and spicy cake final.
