Storia – La distilleria di Port Ellen fù fondata nel 1825 nell’omonima cittadina Port Ellen, situata sulla costa sud dell’isola di Islay, vicino ad altre note distillerie isolane (Laphroaig, Lagavulin, Arbeg). La produzione vera e propria iniziò nel 1833 sotto la direzione di John Ramsay, rimanendo attiva fino al 1892. Le warehouses costruite in quel periodo ancora esistono e sono salvaguardate come “listed buildings” (monumenti classificati). Successivamente nel 1925 fù acquistata dal grande gruppo scozzese “Distillers Company”, ma dal 1929 la distillazione fù bloccata e rimase attivo solo il maltaggio. La proprietà ricostruì la distilleria nel 1967 dotandola di 4 alambicchi (2 wash stills e 2 spirit stills), inizialmente riscaldati da alimentatori meccanici di carbone, successivamente riconvertiti in serpentine riscaldate a vapore. La produzione continuò per tutti gli anni ‘70 fino alla chiusura per problemi finanziari nel 1983. Port Ellen continuò però a maltare per tutte le distillerie di Islay grazie a un accordo siglato nel 1987, infatti è attiva ancora oggi come malt house. Gli stock di Port Ellen furono acquistati dal colosso del beverage Diageo, che tuttora ne rilascia una release annuale con quotazioni sempre crescenti dato l’alto valore collezionistico.

Carattere – Port Ellen è conosciuto per essere un whisky molto complesso che amalgama diversi profili sensoriali: il classico profilo marino di Islay, caratterizzato da una media torbatura accompagnata da accenni salmastri, di iodio e fumosi. Come contraltare invece si contrappongono spesso sentori fruttati, dolcezza al palato, a cui si aggiungono note di liquirizia, di tabacco e di terra. Infine a volte si possono avvertire diverse note medicinali e balsamiche.

History –  Port Ellen was established in 1825 on a place in south of Islay with the same name, Port Ellen. It is beside others Islay Distilleries like Laphroaig, Lagavulin and Ardbeg. The real production of whisky started in 1833 when the owner was John Ramsay, it was active until 1892. The warehouses built in that age still exist nowadays, and they are protected such a “listed buildings” in these days. In 1925 Port Ellen was purchased by the Scottish “Distillery Company” however the production was interrupted in 1929, the malting was been the only phase which continued without stop. The property rebuilt Port Ellen distillery in 1967 adding 4 stills (2 wash stills and 2 spirit stills) initially they were warmed by coal feeder, then trough coil warmed by vapour. The activity kept on in 1970’s and was stopped in 1983 due to financial problems. Port Ellen maintained the malting activity for others ditilleries; Port Ellen still today is a malt house. The Port Ellen stock was bought by Diageo which every year makes a new release with a price rather more expensive due to a collectable reasons.

Character –  It is known to be a complex whisky combining different sensorial profiles: a classic Islay marine profile with an average peat, smooky and briny. To create a contrast we can perceive sweety, yellow fruit, liquorice and earthy notes. Lastly we have to say that sometimes we could find a trace of medicinal and balsamic notes.
