Storia – La Old Rip Van Winkle Distillery ha una storia di quattro generazioni. Il coinvolgimento della famiglia Van Winkle nell’industria del bourbon è iniziata alla fine del 1800 con Julian P. “Pappy” Van Winkle, che nel 1893, solo diciottenne, inizio a lavorare come commesso viaggiatore per la W.L. Weller e Sons di Louisville. Pappy e un amico, Alex Farnsley, acquisirono prima la Weller poi la A. Ph. Stitzel Distillery, che produceva il bourbon per la Weller e le fusero per fondare la Stitzel-Weller Distillery. I loro marchi principali erano W.L. A parte la lunga storia di famiglia, il Van Winkle ha un’altra particolarità, la loro ricetta. Tutti i Borboni Van Winkle sono realizzati con mais, grano e orzo al posto del mais, segale e orzo. Questa ricetta “wheated” dà il bourbon un gusto molto più morbida, liscia e permette anche il whisky di età più garbo.

Carattere – aromi di caramello, vaniglia, miele e quercia; sapori dolci pieni di vaniglia, frumento e caramello. Finale lungo, equilibrato ed elegante

History – The Old Rip Van Winkle distillery has a four generation background. This family began to work in bourbon industry around the ending of 19th century with Julian P. “Pappy” Van Winkle. When he was eighteen started to work for W.L. Weller e Sons of Louisville like traveling salesman. Pappy and his friend Alex Farnsley bought at first the Weller ltd then they bought the A. Stitzel Distillery which produced Bourbon for Weller ltd, lastly they unified these companies. Their fundamental brands were W.L. Weller, Old Fitzgerald, Rebel Yell, and Cabin Still. When Pappy was 61 in may of 1935 he launched the new Stitzel-Weller distillery, south of Lousville. He continued to have a strongly influence to distillery strategy until his death at age of 91. Julian’s son, Julian Jr tried to continue the work of his father but he was forced to sell the distillery to stockholder in 1972. After the distillery was sold Julian worked trough an old brand of his family named Old Rip Van Winkle, the only brand in which Van Winkle family still had copyright. In order to production he used the old stock of Weller distillery. In 1981, Julian III succeeded his father and continued to work until his death, then in 2001 Preston, Julian’s son began to collaborate in Old Rip Van Winkle company. In 2002 Old Rip joined with Buffalo Trace which produce the oldest whiskey by Van Winkle. Even the recipe of Van Winkle has a distinctive trait, all of their products are realized using corn, wheat and barley instead of corn, rye and barley. This recipe is able to give softness even to old whiskey.

Character – Smells of caramel, vanilla, honey and oak; sweety tastes, caramel, vanilla and wheat; the aftertaste is long, balanced and elegant.
