Storia – Venne fondata nel 1825 da un gruppo di agricoltori del Perthshire che si associarono in cooperativa per costituire la distilleria. Nel 1925 fu acquistata da un blender di Glasgow, William Whitely, che lo utilizzo come componente principale del King’s Ransom, allora il blend più costoso del mondo. Successivamente fu assorbita delle Campbell Distillers e in seguito dalla Pernod-Ricard finché nel 2002 fu acquisita da Andrew Symington di Signatory Vintage. Nell’arco dei 160 anni della sua storia Edradour è sempre rimasta fedele ai principi e agli standard dei fondatori mantenendo invariati i processi produttivi e limitando l’utilizzo delle tecnologie moderne (l’ultima modernizzazione risale al 1947 quando la ruota idraulica fu sostituita dall’elettricità). Rimane quindi uno degli ultimi esempi di distilleria-fattoria cooperativa del diciottesimo secolo, sicuramente la più piccola (è gestita da soli tre uomini). La lavorazione del malto rimane quindi svincolata dalle logiche industriali moderne e si avvale ancora di mezzi tradizionali come il mash tun di ghisa con una capacita di una sola tonnellata di orzo, i due washback di pino dell’Oregon (non i diffusissimi e moderni Lauter in acciaio inox) e i due minuscoli alambicchi. Ovviamente la produzione è limitata: in un anno distilla ciò che una tipica distilleria dello Speyside produce un una settimana. Depositaria di antiche tradizioni è oggi meta di frotte di nostalgici (100,000 l’anno) che desiderano farsi un’idea di come il whisky venisse distillato nelle fattorie del diciottesimo secolo.

Carattere – Al naso è molto complesso e fragrante con note fruttate e di dolce sherry, con un pizzico di vaniglia, menta e con traccia di fumo. Al palato è piacevole e di corpo medio, con note di orzo, frutta secca, uva passa e frutta in guscio, noci. Il finale è relativamente lungo, con un leggero accenno di fumo, ciliegie e una legnosità persistente

History –  It was founded in 1825 by a group of Parthshire farmers that joined in a cooperative with aim to create a distillery. Edradour was purchased by William Whitely in 1925 (owner of a Glasgow blender brand) that used it in a King’s Ransom recipe (the most expensive blend in that age).

Recently Edradour was bought by Campbell Distillers, then it passed into hands of Pernod Ricard and in 2002 Andrew Symington (Signatory Vintage) purchased the distillery.

Throughout all its history Edradour is remained faithful with founders’ principles and values maintaining unchanged the productive process and restricting the use of technology (the latest innovation was electricity which has substituted the hydraulic wheel).

It is one of the last patterns of cooperative-distillery establishred in the 18^th century, surely Edradour is the smallest distillery (it is managed by 3 men).

The malt working is made by ancient methods like the mush tun of cast iron with only one ton of barley capacity and two wash back of Oregon pine, lastly two tiny stills.

The production is restricted: every year Edradour distills the amount of a tipic Speyside distillery produce in one week. Custodian of old traditions, edradour is the favourite place for the nostalgic people (100.000 every year).

Character – The smells are complex with a fruity sides and sweety sherry notes, then vanilla, mint and a hint of smoke. With an average-bodied the palate is pleasant, barley, dried fruit, nuts and raisins. The aftertaste is quite long with a light hint of smoke, cherries and wood.
