Storia – Situata sulla riva occidentale dello Spey tra Aberlour e Craigellachie, in origine si chiamava Elchies Distillery, fu una delle prime distillerie dello Speyside, ricevendo la licenza nel 1824 sotto la proprietà di Alexander Reid. Nel 1892 la proprietà passa a Roderick Kemp, mercante di vini ed ex distillatore di Talisker, che la amplia e ne cambia il nome in Macallan-Glenlivet (suffisso che rimase fino al 1980). Negli anni ‘50 viene programmato l’ampliamento della distilleria e nel 1964 ne viene edificata una nuova accanto a quella antica. A fine anni ’60 Macallan decide di puntare sui single malt e nel 1978 viene lanciato sul mercato il 10 anni -che diventerà il best seller della distilleria ed uno dei più venduti al mondo- e nel 1984 viene proposto il primo 18 anni. La distilleria, prossima all’apertura di un nuovo impianto (un progetto da 100 milioni di sterline che la farà diventare la più grande di Scozia con una capacità produttiva che raggiungerà i 16 milioni di litri annui), attualmente suddivide la produzione su due impianti separati ed è complessivamente equipaggiata con due mash tun (un full lauter e un semi lauter), 28 washback (22 di acciaio inossidabile e 6 di legno) e 21 alambicchi (14 spirit still + 7 wash still). Il riscaldamento degli alambicchi di rame (i più piccoli dello Speyside e dalla forma compatta e schiacciata) è a fuoco diretto (a gas). Macallan (come anche Glengoyne) non usa la torba e fino al 1994 utilizzava esclusivamente una delle migliori qualità d’orzo scozzesi reperibili, il Golden Promise, poi sostituito da altre qualità maggiormente produttive. Attualmente il 20% dell’orzo utilizzato è della varietà locale Minstrel. Per la maturazione dei suoi distillati utilizzava esclusivamente botti di quercia europea (ex sherry Gonzalez Byass prevalentemente first-fill), di cui resta uno dei maggiori importatori, ma dall’uscita nel 2004 della serie “Fine Oak” vengono utilizzate anche botti di quercia americana. Nel 1999 Macallan entra a far parte di Edrington Group. Nel 2012 parte del core range storico (10, 12 e 15) viene sostituito da nuovi imbottigliamenti No Age Statement (Gold, Amber, Sienna e Ruby). Nel 2014 ben 9,9 milioni di bottiglie di Macallan sono state vendute in tutto il mondo.

Carattere – Il Macallan 7 è un whisky di media corposità, dal colore ambrato, dagli aromi di sherry, cioccolata all’arancia e malto e da un palato dolce e ricco di miele, marzapane e confettura di albicocca. Il Macallan è un componente importante di moltissimi blend (cui è destinato circa il 25% della produzione) come The Famous Grouse, Long John, Cutty Sark, J&B, Ballantine’s e Chivar Regal.

Giovinetti – Nei primi anni Sessanta nasce la “Giovinetti Intercontinental Brands” che a tutti gli effetti, con il Glen Grant 5 anni, crea in Italia il mercato del whisky single malt. Ceduto Glen Grant al Gruppo Seagram viene fondata la “Giovinetti e Figli” che nei primi anni ’80, succedendo a “Fratelli Rinaldi Importatori” (i primi distributori italiani di Macallan), porta rapidamente al successo sul mercato italiano il Macallan, grazie proprio al 7 anni, imbottigliamento esclusivo per l’Italia.

History –  Macallan is located on the west coast of the Spey between Aberlour and Craigellachie, at the beginning it was called Elchies Distillery. Macallan was one of the first Speyside Distillery, it obtained the distillation license in 1824 while the owner was Alexander Raid. The property has passed to hands of Roderick Kemp in 1892, he was a wines merchant and ex Talisker distiller, he extended the distillery and changed the name in Macallan-Glenlivet (a suffix which remained until 1980). In the 1950’s they minded to extend the distillery and finally in 1964 it was built a new one beside the oldest. At the end of 1960’s Macallan-Glenlivet decided to invest on a single malt whisky and in 1978 they lanched on market the 10 years old that becoming fastly the best seller of Macallan, and one of the most sold in the entire world. In 1984 they proposed the 18 years old. The property invested about 100 milions of pounds in order to become th biggest Scottish distillery (16 milions of litres per year). Actually the production is divided into 2 structures and it is equipped with 2 mush tun (1 full lauter and 1 semi lauter) 28 washback (22 of inoxidable steel and 6 of wood) 21 stills (14 spirit stills and 7 wash stills). The copper stills are warmed up by direct fire (the copper stills are the smallest of Speyside, they have a flattening form). Macallan, like Glengoyn dosen’t use the peat though they used the Golden Promise barley until 1994, one of the most appreciated variety on the market, then they have chosen a barley more productive than GP. Nowadays Ministrel is the variety of barley used by Macallan. They used to use European Oak casks to aging their whisky (ex Gonzalez Byass sherry, usually first fill) although from 2004 with the Fine Oak series they adopted American Oak casks (ex Bourbon). In 1999 Macallan was bought by Edrington Group. In 2012 a core range section (10, 12 and 15 years old) is changed introducing No Age Statement versions (Gold, Amber, Sienna and Ruby). Nine milions of bottles was sold in 2014.

Character –  The Macallan 7 years old is a middle-bodied whisky, with amber colour, sherry smells, orange chocolate and malt, the palate is sweety and riched by honey, marziapan and apricot marmelade. The Macallan is an important ingrdients of many blends (in which is destined about 25% of whole production) such The Famouse Grouse, Long John, Cutty Sark, J&B, Ballantine’s and Chivas Regal.

Giovinetti – “Giovinetti Intercontinental brands” was born in the early 60’s, they created single malt demand in Italy with Glen Grant 5 years old. They sold Glen Grant to Seagram LTD and then they established the “Giovinetti and Figli”, after in 1980’s they succeeded to “Rinaldi” (the first importer of Macallan in Italy) and they conquered the Italian market properly with this macallan 7 years old.
