Storia – Rosebank fu fondata nel 1840, a Camelon (Lowlands), da James Rankine già proprietario di un’importante drogheria, con l’intento di distillare acquaviti di grande pregio.  Nel 1914 è stata una delle distillerie a costituire la Scottish Malt Distillers.

Dopo oltre un secolo e mezzo, nonostante l’alta qualità dei distillati prodotti, nel 1993 la distilleria fallisce e viene acquistata dal colosso Diageo nel 2002.

Rosebank è oggi distribuito in gran parte da imbottigliatori indipendenti che lo avevano acquistato prima della chiusura.

È un whisky di straordinaria eleganza, annoverato dagli esperti tra i migliori in assoluto nel suo genere.

A contraddistinguere le fasi della lavorazione era soprattutto l’impiego di mastelli che raccoglievano il vapore di condensa della prima distillazione, destinato ad arricchire l’aroma dell’acqua utilizzata nelle successive fasi.

Carattere – Whisky di colore paglierino, ha un aroma fresco, piacevolmente erbaceo, con note di petrolio; il gusto di grande carattere rivela sentori di torba (è forse l’unica acquavite delle Lowlands a presentare tale peculiarità) e malto, nonché ricordi di spezie e l’immancabile acqua di rose.

Storia dell’imbottigliatore – Con ogni probabilità Dun Eideann è un nome che non vi dirà nulla, mentre di Signatory avrete senz’altro sentito parlare. Beh, i due sono la stessa cosa; per meglio dire, Dun Eideann è uno dei brand del colosso Signatory Vintage Scotch Whisky Company, tra i più grandi imbottigliatori indipendenti scozzesi. La loro storia è piuttosto recente, se confrontata con quella di altri grandi imbottigliatori come Cadenhead’s e Gordon&MacPhail: Bryan e Andrew Symington cominciano ad imbottigliare i propri single malt nel 1988 in un magazzino doganale di Leith, allora famosa cittadina portuale dove arrivava il vino importato dalla Francia. Poco dopo, ad inizio anni ‘90, l’ingrandimento della compagnia spinge i fratelli Symington verso Edimburgo (Newhaven per la precisione). Qui ottengono la licenza per l’imbottigliamento dei propri prodotti, che avviene oggigiorno con un processo semi-automatico. Spesso, i loro imbottigliamenti riportano il cask number (grossa parte della loro produzione si compone di single cask), la data di distillazione ed imbottigliamento.

Signatory Vintage è il loro brand più famoso; il nome, che poi è anche quello della compagnia, è dovuto all’intento iniziale secondo il quale le bottiglie provenienti da una dato barile sarebbero state firmate da una qualche celebrità (signatory significa firmatario in inglese). Sebbene questa idea non abbia trovato seguito, il nome è rimasto. Numerose sono le serie che ricadono nel brand Signatory Vintage, come la Un-chillfiltered Collection, Silent Stills, Cask Strength Collection insieme a molte altre. Ci sono poi, nel portafoglio di Signatory, altri brand quali Prestonfield (dal nome dell’hotel dove i fratelli Symington lavoravano negli anni ‘80), Scottish Wildlife (attivo durante gli anni ‘90) ed appunto Dun Eideann, serie di imbottigliamenti a 40% dedicato prevalentemente al mercato europeo. Chiudiamo segnalando che dal 2002 Signatory è anche proprietaria della distilleria Edradour, la più piccola di Scozia.

History – Rosebank distillery was established in Camelon, Lowalands, in 1840, when James Rankine, owner of a well-known grocery store, decided to start distilling great quality spirit. In 1914, it played a role in the foundation of Scottish Malt Distillers. One hundred and fifty-three years after its opening, in 1953, despite great quality products distilled in it, Rosebank distillery went bankrupt; in 2002, multinational corporation Diageo acquired the distillery.

Nowadays, Rosebank whisky is not easy to find; fortunately, some independent bottlings are available. If you will be lucky enough to have some drops of it in your Glencairn, you will easily notice how extremely elegant it is; it is considered as one of the best expression by experts.

Regarding production process, it is worth to remember how this distillery was familiar with the use of tubs for condensation vapor gathering  coming from first phase of the distillation process; this was then used in order to enrich the character of water used in later phases of the distillation process.

Character – Common features are pale yellow color, fresh aroma, pleasantly herbal, and petroleum notes. Great personality with hints of peat (maybe the only Lowlander with this characteristic), malt and spices, going along with rose water (distillery is named after roses growing nearby).

About Dun Eideann – Probably, you may have never heard about Dun Eideann, while Signatory may sounds you familiar. Actually, the two are the same thing, being Dun Eideann one of the Signatory Vintage Scotch Whisky Company’s brands, one of the largest independent Scottish bottler. Unlike other colossal like Cadenhead’s and Gordon&MacPhail, Signatory’s history is relatively new: company was established by Symington brothers, Andrew and Bryan, when in 1988 they started bottling their whisky in a bonded warehouse in Leith, a well-known harbor were French wine was imported. A rapid company expansion pushed Symington brother to move to Newhaven (Edinburgh) in 1992. Here, they were granted a license to bottle their own products on site. Often, distillation and bottling dates are reported on bottle’s label, alongside with cask number (big part of Signatory’s production is made of single cask).

Signatory Vintage is company’s most famous brand; its name, also company’s name, is due to the initial intent to have all the bottles coming from one single cask singed by a celebrity. Somehow that idea was never implemented, but the name stuck. Collections like Un-chillfiltered Collection, Silent Stills, Cask Strength Collection are all part of Signatory Vintage. Furthermore, the company owns other brands like Prestonfield ( from the name of the hotel in which Symington brothers used to work during the eighties), Scottish Wildlife (in the ‘90) and finally Dun Eideann, consisting in a series of 40% bottlings mostly for European Market. Signatory also has been owning smallest Scottish distillery Edradour since 2002.
