N: I molti anni in bottiglia si fanno leggermente sentire, appena aperta non sprigiona subito il proprio aroma. Troviamo un sentore di miele leggermente stantio, quindi fiori e segatura bagnata che rapidamente varia in sabbia umida. Odore metallico anticipa in una folata lieve la frutta esotica che muta in mela rossa, ananas e camomilla. L’incenso rimane lieve nel naso.
P: Anche il palato è ermetico al primo assaggio, lascia trasparire solo il sapore di sale marino e di sasso bagnato. Quindi gustiamo mango acerbo e fiori di camomilla accompagnati dal malto e dal pan di spagna. Soggiunge il pepe bianco e i sentori legnosi di frutta secca, declinabili in noci mandorle e arachidi. Queste si trasformano in burro e senape con un fondo mentolato.
F: Ritroviamo il sasso bagnato, il senso di legnosità della frutta secca, le mandorle e le arachidi salate. Ecco di nuovo la senape che precede il ricordo di aceto di mele e melassa; si chiude con una leggera eco di pera matura.
Un whisky equilibrato, coerente ma non monocorde. Sicuramente tra le migliori espressioni della distilleria Glenfiddich assaggiate finora. Probabilmente è un dram da inizio serata, di sicuro non risulta difficile da bere; il naso elegante, il palato lieve e setoso, il finale di buona persistenza lo rendono una bella compagnia per l’aperitivo. Diciotto è l’età migliore secondo molti, forse con questa bottiglia ci sentiamo di unirci ai più. La pecca maggiore, come ci piace ricordare in questi casi, è il prezzo che non rispecchia il valore della bottiglia. Elegante.

N: Wow, this nose is hermetic! It definitely needs some time to disclose some of itself; but if you give it a chance, this might turns in not being a bad idea. Very polite and delicate, with stale honey, flowers and wet sawdust rapidly turning into wet sand. Metallic scent comes up just before some exotic fruit and red apple, pineapple and chamomile. There is also a permeating hint of incense.
P: Wow, this is an hermetic palate! First impressions are about wet rock and marine salt. As time goes by it slowly starts disclosing itself, and unripe mango and chamomile flowers emerge, going along with malt and sponge-cake. In a never-ending evolution it is now time for white pepper and woody scent of dried fruit (walnut, peanut, almond), turning lately in butter and mustard over a minty background.
F: Wet rock is still here, and so is dried fruit woody’s sensation (almond and salty peanut) and mustard. New scents are apple vinegar and molasses. Experience ends with echo of ripe pear.
We could briefly describe this whisky as balanced and coherent, but monotonous as well. It is one of the most satisfying Glenfiddich spirit we have ever tasted. It could do just fine as a pre-dinner dram, being very easy-to-drink and showing an elegant nose, delicate and silky palate and a good persistent final. According to an old whisky world belief, 18-years old is the best compromise in terms of ageing; this Glenfiddich’s expression could validate this hypothesis. About the price: ouch… Anyway, that’s satisfying. That’s elegant.
