Storia – Cragganmore -il cui nome deriva dalla roccia basaltica proveniente dal monte Craggan che fu utilizzata per costruire gli edifici- fu fondata nel 1869 da “Big” John Smith (forse uno dei figli illegittimi di George Smith, fondatore della Glenlivet), uno dei più esperti distillatori vittoriani, che avviò e gestì diverse distillerie in tutta la Scozia come Glenfarclas, Dailuaine, Glenlivet e Macallan. Dopo queste esperienze, ritenendosi ormai pronto a fondare una sua distilleria, scelse una vecchia baracca (bothy) di contrabbandieri sulla riva est dello Spey. L’abbondanza di acqua –relativamente dura- data dal ruscello sorgivo Craggan Burn (un’ampia ansa del fiume Spey che fino al 1950 servì anche come fonte energetica), la disponibilità di ottimo orzo e di torba per maltarlo e, non ultimo, la vicinanza alla linea ferroviaria ne facevano infatti il luogo perfetto per una distilleria. Cragganmore fu la prima distilleria ad avere l’accesso diretto alla ferrovia e a servirsi dei “whisky specials” (lunghi treni diretti a sud che trasportavano migliaia di galloni di distillato). Proprio i  treni erano l’altra grande passione di “Big” John, ma la sua notevole stazza (140 kg) lo costringeva a viaggiare nei vagoni bagagli. Purtroppo morì nel 1886, un anno prima del viaggio inaugurale dello “whisky special” carico del suo whisky. Il fratello George lo sostituì fino al 1893, quando la responsabilità passo al figlio ventunenne Gordon, che nel 1901 assunse il famoso architetto Charles Doig di Elgin per ricostruire e ammodernare la distilleria. Successivamente alla morte di Gordon (1912), la vedova Mary Jane si prese carico della distilleria (che chiuse tra il 1917 e il 1918). Nel 1927 il 50% della distilleria fu rilevata da Distillers Company Ltd. Nel 1964 gli alambicchi passarono da 2 a 4 e un anno dopo (1965) fu acquisita completamente da DCL. La distilleria, cambiata poco nel corso dei decenni, vanta un mash tun lauter di acciaio inossidabile con cupola di rame dalla capacità di 6,8 tonnellate, 6 washback di pino dell’Oregon e 4 alambicchi, due dei quali (gli spirit still) anziché essere a collo di cigno (protesi verso l’alto) sono invece mozzati a mezza altezza (a “T”). Non si sa bene a cosa sia dovuta questa forma inconsueta (presente fin dal principio), in ogni caso ogni volta che un alambicco dev’essere sostituito viene riprodotto fedelmente, per mantenere inalterato il carattere del whisky. Così come non sono mai state modificate nemmeno le serpentine worm tub vecchio stile usate per la condensazione del distillato. Il processo di fermentazione del malto dura circa 60 ore. La distilleria è attiva tra aprile e novembre.

Carattere – Cragganmore, con il suo profilo tra l’erbaceo e il floreale e non senza una piacevole presenza di fumo, è un malto molto apprezzato per la sua notevole complessità (era tra le distillerie preferite di Michael Jackson). Il caratteristico profilo aromatico di questo single malt dona da anni carattere all’Old Parr, un blend molto venduto in Messico, Colombia e Venezuela.

History – Cragganmore distillery, named after basaltic rock of Craggan mountain, was established by in 1869 by “Big” John Smith (maybe, George Smith’s illegitimate child, Glenlivet distillery’s founder), considered one of the most skilled distiller of Victorian age.

Initially, he gained experience as manager of several distilleries in Scotland, as Glenfarclas, Dailuaine, Glenlivet e Macallan. He was then ready to start his own distillery. Perfect location was pinpointed in an old smuggler hug on the Est shore of Spey river: profusion of water from Graggan Burn creek, availability of very good barley and peat for malting process made that old shack an ideal place for a distillery. Furthermore, an addition feature made that place so appealing: thanks to its proximity, Cragganmore distillery had direct access to railway. “Whisky specials”, big trains able to carry millions of gallons all over the country, were extensively exploited by the distillery. Train was also a big passion for Big John beside whisky, but unfortunately he died in 1886 and therefore, when inaugural trip of the “whisky special” taking all over the country its whisky took place the following year, he could not attend the event.

The, Big John’s brother George became distiller’s manager until 1983, when he was substituted by his 21-years-old child Gordon. In 1901, he decided to hire famous architect Charles Doig from Elgin, with the aim to modernize the distillery. After Gordon’s death in 1912, widow Mary Jane took care of the affairs. Overtaking a 2-year closure (1917 and 1918), half of the distillery was revealed by Distillers Company Ltd company in 1927. In turn of two years, between 1964 and 1965, distillery’s capacity was doubled (from two to four stills) and was acquired entirely by DCL.

Few are the novelties introduced in the distillery over the course of the years. It is furnished with a stainless-steel, 6.8 ton mash tun; 6 washaback made with Oregon pine wood and 4 stills. Two of these, the spirit stills, are T-shaped, being half-height cut off. Although no clear explanation seems to exist, this shape has to be meaningful to the distillery, since every time still substitution is required, great care is squandered in order to reproduce original shape: no change in spirit’s character due to still’s shape is wished. For the same reason, old-style worn tub cooling coil are kept as in origin. Barley fermentation process takes 60 hours. Distillery is operative from April to November.

Character – Cragganmore has a characteristic mixed floral-herbal character, accompanied by smoky notes. Its complexity makes it enjoyable and appreciated (one of Michael Jackson’s favorite distillery). Old Parr’s reputation, one of top-sell blended whisky in Mexico, Colombia and Venezuela, is due to Cragganmore’s aromatic features.
